The Breakfast Club revisited: Hey, hey, hey, hey…

October 16, 2008 · 4 Comments

So with which character from The Breakfast Club or Sixteen Candles, do you most identify? This was the question as posed by Backpacking Dad earlier this week, which I saw through a post by Muskrat and since this has to be in by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. to qualify for a blog giveaway he is having for two specially-themed (read “girlie”) notebooks (which I’d like to win for my wife), I decided I’d get this in for my Flashback Friday here early.

To get you in the proper frame of mind, while you’re reading this post, click on this video and give a listen to the song which was made famous by the movie (but in a different context, from Live Aid since it’s too easy to post the YouTube video from the movie– like Muskrat, not to pick on any one person or anything, I thought I’d give something a bit different):

Hmmmm. As I posted in a comment to Muskrat’s post (no more links for you ’skrat, I’ve given you two already in this post, plus what do you have against Wisconsin anyway? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!) I guess I identify most with Brian, I admit, and not just because my real name is Bryan. Of course, I wrestled in ninth grade, had dandruff like Allison (or was that lice I had? whichever) and never did it either like Claire, but Brian was such a dweeb–- and yeah, that’s what I was too.

How was I a dweeb?

1. When I started high school (ours was a junior-senior high school because we were in a rural area), I was in junior high band and played percussion (badly even on a practice pad like this) — and then quit in eighth grade.

2. I wrestled in ninth grade and spent most of my time on my back, counting lights like this (except mine were on and you got to three out of the six lights and you were off the mat anyway) as it was called for those of us (a.k.a. “fish” because we were always flopping on the mat) who always were pinned– and quit that year.

3. I ran cross country for three years, where I almost finished last and my best friend Ed always finished first (he was the one who talked me into it)– and quit before my senior year.

Is there a pattern here? Hmmm.

  1. I quit.
  2. I quit.
  3. I quit.

Yep, definite pattern there.

You know what? Maybe I need to be talking to my therapist about all of this. Come to think of it I haven’t seen him in about six months. Maybe I need to go rest on something like this .
